Asim Waqif was born in the year 1978 in Hyderabad, India. He studied architecture at the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi. His career started with him working as an art director with films and television. This led him to make independent documentaries and videos, which eventually paved way for his inclination towards art as a full-fledged practice. For Asim, his concerns pertaining to ecology and anthropology seemingly find their way into his works, both as a theme and construct. His works have a tendency to turn as much toward art as design yet are always closely linked to town planning and policies that exist for the use of public space, subjects he is personally rather well versed with. He has done extensive research on the vernacular systems of ecological management, especially with regards to waste, water and architecture. His more recent projects have a strong contextual reference to contemporary urban planning, or rather the lack of it, and the disregard when it comes to using public spaces, with no regulation of any kind. The creation of an urban image does not interest him as much as what it takes to build it. The idealisation, demolition, deconstruction and all the stages that come in- between, are central to his installations, each of which are backed up by extensive research, as the notion of context is exceedingly important for his practice. As a result, Asim’s works show a true blend of tradition and technology that is nothing short of poetic.

His artworks are known to bear manual processes that are deliberately painstaking and laborious while the products themselves are often temporary and sometimes even designed to decay. He has worked in sculpture, site-specific public installation, video, photography, and more recently with large-scale interactive installations that combine traditional and new media technologies. Waqif has held solo shows at Nature Morte, New Delhi and Galerie Templon, Paris in 2013, and the Palais Tokyo, Paris in 2012. His works have recently been included in the Asia Pacific Triennal 8 at the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; the Queens Museum, New York; Blain/Southern Gallery, Berlin; the Devi Art Foundation, Gurgaon; and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Noida.
The artist lives and works in Delhi.
