about artist

Suryakant Lokhande was born in Mumbai in 1969. He was passionate about art since childhood; and so, after completing his secondary schooling, he was admitted to J.J.School of Art. He worked at advertising agencies like Lintas and O&M after graduation, where he had the opportunity to learn and understand the link between art and media. This experience allowed him to hone his skills and significantly contributed to his artistic sensibilities.

Suryakant Lokhande is a multi-media artist whose works are a blend of rural and urban hybrid culture. In his early days as an artist, Suryakant found inspiration in pop art which led to his mixed-media works in high-gloss paint. His subjects, adopted from the real world, were liberated on the canvas with a voice of their own. The ability to transform his subjects, is therefore, a key aspect of his work.

When it comes to sculpting Suryakant’s subjects are sometimes eclectic and he uses unconventional materials like old wood doors, leather, fiber glass or waste plastic.

Many of his works can be found in the public domain. A prominent piece that was created in collaboration with RPG Art Foundation, called ‘The Camera Man’, was installed outside Mehboob Studios in Bandra and has been greatly admired by celebrities and civilians alike.

The artist has held solo and group exhibitions in India and around the world and his works are popular among collectors and art connoisseurs.
