about artist

Amit Ambalal was born in 1943 in Ahmadabad, Gujarat, India. He did not receive a formal training in the visual arts but instead was influenced by his mother who was trained by the renowned Gujarati painter, Chhaganlal Jadav. He graduated from the Ahmadabad University in Business and then Law and was part of his family owned business until he sold it in 1977 to pursue his artistic pursuits at the age of 57. Watercolour is his preferred medium, enhancing the radiance and transparency of his works and themes. His works are focused on the human experience. He depicts these through popular religious traditions and devotional paintings robust with human drama. He comments on the everyday with satirical undertones and quirky depictions of the celestial. He held his first exhibition in 1980 in Ahmadabad. He has participated in several solo and group shows in India as well as abroad.
