about artist

Dharamanarayan was born in 1939 in Tripura, India. He studied at the Kala Bhavan Santiniketan. His tempera works combine childhood fantasies with adult reverie. His figures defy gravity and float among mythological creatures, drawing upon Indian miniature techniques. Political establishments occur frequently in his works using the visual language of Bengali folk art and Kalighat painting. He has had several shows in New Delhi and Calcutta and has also participated in several renowned national and international exhibitions such as Indian Painting Today at the Jehangir Art Gallery in 1981, Contemporary Indian Paintings, and Frankfurt in 1986 and Wounds Centre of International Modern Art, Calcutta and National Gallery of Modern Art New Delhi in 1993. He represented India at the Sao Paulo and Havana Biennales in 1987 and 1986 respectively. Dharamanarayan died in 1997.
