about artist

Subba Ghosh was born in Delhi in 1961. In 1984 he completed his BA in painting from the College of Art, Delhi. He also completed his MA in painting from the same in 1990. He was awarded the scholarship to Surikov Institute of Fine Art in Moscow Russia from 1984-1987. He was also awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship to continue his education at the Slade School, London where he was commended with a Master’s in Fine Arts in 1996. He is concerned about contemporary social realities within India as well its vibrant street art. He uses the widely recognised and commercially cheap form of hand-painted billboards to represent the lowest classes of society that one usually ignores. He uses the sheer scale of the works to bring these apathetic characters to almost God-like beings. In 2000 his works were exhibited in “Combine” at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. In 2001 he exhibited at the Max Muller Bhavan, New Delhi. In 1998 his solo exhibition, Sites, was held at the Queen’s Gallery at The British Council in New Delhi. Ghosh’s works have been exhibited frequently in exhibitions across India and UK besides Poland and Canada. His works are in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, India, The Lalit Kala Academy and at Museum of Ostrow, Poland. Subba Ghosh works and lives in New Delhi, India.
