about artist

Debanjan Roy was born in 1975, and he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts in 1998 and received his Master’s degree in 2000 from Rabindra Bharti University, Santiniketan. His ability to transfer his expression through figurative sculptures is astonishing. He revels in the completeness of his work through sculptures; the 3D attribute of sculptures gives him that satisfaction. One of the few artists who uses Gandhiji’s motif extensively in his series, in his sculpture titled “Bapu with Soldiers” he depicts a fragile Gandhiji being supported by soldiers in a moment of cheer. The privilege of the soldiers is apparent while Bapu has an expression of complete content and security. He has always demonstrated the color red to symbolize Gandhiji’s contribution for our nation’s freedom, personifying the sacrifices he made for the county’s liberation. His methodologies fuse traditional expressiveness with pop culture color palette fueled with patriotism and nationalism, a subject that not too many artist work with.

On completion of his Master’s degree he was awarded for the “Best Sculpture” from the West Bengal State Academy. He has participated in a number of solo shows including those held at Gandhara Gallery, Kolkata in 2007 and at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata in 2002. His notable group shows include ‘Who Knew? Mr. Gandhi’ at Aicon Gallery, London in 2008; ‘Eastern Edge’ at Aicon Gallery, New York in 2007; ‘New Wave in Bengal Art’ at Gallery Akar Prakar, Kolkata in 2005; ‘Tale of Two Cities’ at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata & Mumbai and Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in 2004. Debanjan Roy lives and works from Kolkata.
