Born in 1949 in Pune, Maharashtra, Sudhir Patwardhan graduated in Medicine. A practicing radiologist, he simultaneously took to art. He had his first show in New Delhi at E. Alkazi's art gallery Art Heritage in 1979, and later at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. Since then the artist has held several solo exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (1979,1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2002); Art Heritage, New Delhi (1990); Gallery Chemould (1994), Mumbai; Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi (1999); Sakshi Gallery, Bangalore and Mumbai (2001, 02), among other venues. His work formed part of the show ‘Gateway Bombay’ at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM). Sudhir Patwardhan considers himself a painter of people. The artist’s oils on canvas works offer multiple peculiar perspectives into suburban life of Mumbai, the country’s commercial and financial hub.
