Comprises of 18 lithographed plates that are an illustration of the rock-cut temples of India. These have been selected from the best examples of the different series of caves at Ellora, Ajanta, Cuttack, Salsette, Karli and Mahavellipore.

Drawn on stone by Mr. T. C. Dibdin, from the sketches carefully made on the spot. James Fergusson travelled to India for business but was so flattered by Indian architecture and archaeology that he pursued the same and became a leading authority on Indian architecture. His extensive travels in western and southern India lead to the publication of this book.
