about artist

Born in 1946 Nalini Malani trained as a painter at the Sir J.J School of Art in 1964. She earned accolades in the 1980s for her works which circumvented feminist issues, and later in the early 1990s for her innovative theater and installation projects. Her multimedia projects revolve around recurring themes of gender, memory, race, and transnational politics. Her delving with regards realistic themes such as India’s postcolonial history is balanced with creative transmigration of stories from Hindu and Greek mythology. Her experimental temperament has also inspired her to create theatrically artistic allegories for the present time, based on nineteenth-century literary works by authors such as Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Composing her artworks and rendering it with pixelated yet clarified contrasts attributes he works with a defined uniqueness. Nalini is a leading woman contemporary artist and continues to leave a mark and in this case dots upon the viewer’s mind.

Nalini Malani secured a French government scholarship for Fine arts to study in Paris between 1970 and 1972. More recently the prestigious Centre Pompidou and Castello di Rivoli hosted her first retrospective in Paris in 2017 – 2018 and continues in Rivoli in 2018. Nalini Malani is lives and works in Mumbai.
