Gobardhan Ash was born in 1907 in India, he pursued his academics at the Fine Arts Government School
of Arts in Kolkata between the years 1926 and 1930. He late completed his Masters from the Government School of Arts and Crafts in Chennai in 1932. Gobardhan Ash won the First Prize of the Madras Academy of Fine Arts in 1983.
Throughout his career he resisted the application of pedagogy art forms or techniques, his works
displayed intriguing and variant styles, differing according to the theme he adopted, be it portraiture or
landscapes.
He held the office of Chief Artist at the Indian institute of Arts and Industry in Kolkata in 1946 for a period of two years. In 1953, he became a Senior Teacher at the Indian Art School of Kolkata, where he
stayed for two years, before founding the Fine Art Mission of Begumpur in 1956. He then started his
career as an independent artist and remained so until his death. The artist passed away in the year 1996.
