Born in 1925 in Gujarat, Tyeb Mehta did his Diploma in Painting from Sir J. J School of Arts, Mumbai. The versatile artist freely adopted techniques and styles associated with modernist as well as avant-garde art movements in North America and Europe, simultaneously imbibing India’s rich artistic traditions. In fact, he switched to purely 'Indian' themes through the 1970s and 1980s. Later, his imagination was captured by the various incarnations of the Goddess as Durga, Kali etc. Apart from his solo shows, among his recent selected group exhibitions are 'Multiple Modernities: India, Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA; ‘Freedom 2008 – Sixty Years of Indian Independence’, CIMA, Kolkata; ‘India Art Now: Between Continuity; and Transformation’, Province of Milan, Milan, Italy.
