about artist

Amitabha Banerjee was born in 1928, in Bengal near Chattagram. He settled with his family in Kolkata in 1938 and got a job at the U.S.I.S. in Kolkata after graduating Art School. Initial works work were realistic in nature only to go through a drastic change, which introduced an evolved dimension to his art. In awe of the Bengal School masters, he didn’t let them influence his works. His expressionist objectivism were indicative of his artistic uniqueness. Some of his better known works are the ‘Owl’, ‘The Majestic Gaze’ and ‘The Dove’. He received the National Award from Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in 1980 & 1981 and was honoured by Rabindra Bharati University with the lifetime achievement award in 2008.
