Biren De was born on 8th October, 1926, in Faridpur, Bengal (now Bangladesh). He relocated to Kolkata and joined the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata in 1944, but failed to receive his diploma. After which he moved to New Delhi and was commissioned for a mural at the University of Delhi in 1949. His first solo exhibition was held in Salon De Mai, Paris in 1951. After which he exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1962. Examples of his work are in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Berlin State Museum, the National Gallery, Prague, and elsewhere. Returning to India he joined the College of Art, Delhi in 1952. During his tenure, he spent a year in New York on a Fulbright Scholarship, after which he began to depict his tantric symbolism. His works include a large variety of spiritualistic and tantric meditative expressionism; along with figuratives that accentuated his thought processes. He received the Lalit Kala Akademi National Award in 1958, which he received for the second time again in 1964. The Government of India included him in the Republic Day honours list for the civilian award of the Padma Shri in 1992. Biren De passed away on the 12th of March, 2011 in Delhi.
