Born in 1958 in Kerala, artist Aji V.N. received his BFA in painting from College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram and his Master's Degree from the College of Arts, New Delhi. In Delhi, he was able to acquaint himself with temple sculptures, miniature paintings and tribal artefacts which would go on to be influential in his creations. He also worked as a lecturer in the Department of Painting in the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum from 1996-97. In 2000, he moved to Rotterdam, Netherlands to be with his wife.
His works are replete with contrasting qualities. His large landscapes and otherworld figures are painted with the precision of a miniaturist, amalgamating both vibrancy and melancholia and his experience of the geography of Kerala and Netherlands. He is known for his works in sfumato, an age-old technique, which requires tones of colours to transition gradually - lending his paintings an ethereal quality, open to multiple interpretations.
Works by artist Aji V.N. have been a part of several solo and group exhibitions across the world. Some of his notable solo exhibitions include Gallerie School, Amsterdam in 1995; Mirchandani+Steinrücke Gallery, Mumbai, India. (cat.) in 2007; Nature Morte, New Delhi, in 2009 and Aji V.N. Tekeningen. Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, The Netherlands. (cat.) in 2013.
