(b.1969) Born in Mumbai, he is considered one of the most talented and brightest young painters from India. In 1990 he received his BFA from Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art. Among his select solo exhibitions are ‘War Is Over’, Institute of Contemporary Indian Art (ICIA), Mumbai (2007), ‘To Whomsoever It May Concern’, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (2005), `Allegory` Lakeeren Art Gallery, Mumbai (2002), `Obstacles`, Aditya Ruia Art Gallery, Mumbai (2002), `We Cover You`, Alliance France de Bombay, Mumbai (2001), `Metal Meets Mettle` Jamaat Art Gallery, Mumbai (2001), `Inside Out`, Jehangir Art Gallery (2000), `The Book of Nothing` Nehru Centre Art Gallery, Mumbai (1999), and ‘Memories of my Grandmother`, Mahalsa Art Gallery, Mumbai (1996) amongst others. He has participated in several group shows including ‘Satyagraha’, organized by Afrikhadi, South Africa (2006), ‘Bird on Wire’, Online Show, organized by Arts Trust, Mumbai (2005), `VOEUX D`ARTISTES` Annual Show at Lyon and Marseille, France (2004), `Ideas and Images` Annual Show, National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai (2004), `A Tribute to Bhupen Khakhar` , Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai (2004), `Masterpieces of Contemporary Indian Art` in cooperation with Gallery `Muller & Plate` Munich and Sotheby’s, Odeonsplatz, Germany (2004), `The Quotable Stencil`, Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai (2002), etc, He has been shortlisted twice for Charles Wallace Scholarships and Award (1998 & 1999), and was an invitee artist for ‘The Foundation for Indian Artist’ (Amsterdam) apart from being selected as an emerging artist for a Dutch documentary film on Indian contemporary art. He has also won Maharashtra State Art Award (2001, 1998), Tilak Smarak Trust Award, Pune (2000, 1998), Art Society of India Award (1998), Camlin Western Region Art Competition Award (1998), and Bombay Art Society Award (1998, 1997). Suryakant Lokhande lives and works in Mumbai.
