Raqib Shaw was born in 1974 in Calcutta. He spent his formative years in Kashmir but had to eventually relocate with his family to Delhi in 1992 due to the political unrest in the region. He got involved in the family business of selling antiques, carpets, fabrics and so on which eventually took him to London. After encountering the works of Masters at the National Gallery in London he decided to shift his life path and become an artist. He completed his Bachelors in 2001 and Masters in the year 2002 from the
Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, London.
His works are intricately detailed, often incorporating gems, rhinestones, glitter and
metallic enamel paints. His sources of influence are rich and varied, from Hindu Mythology to Persian and Asian Craft including the Hokusai prints, Kashmiri shawls, medieval heraldry, and Persian miniatures. His hallmark style includes using pools of enamel and metallic industrial paints painstakingly applied through a porcupine quill.
Some of his solo exhibitions include ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ at Victoria Miro Gallery, London in 2004, ‘Absence Of God’, White Cube at London Hoxton Square in 2009 and
‘Raqib Shaw: Reinventing the Old Masters’ at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2018. The artist lives and works in London.
