From the Female Gaze: Nude works by Indian Women Artist. We get Ms. Sunny Chandiramani, Vice President Client Relations, AstaGuru Auction House, to pen her thoughts on the topic.
The study of the nude form has been central to aesthetics in all eras and cultures of the world. In the western world, whether it is the ancient Roman Greco art and architecture or the Renaissance art from the medieval period, the depiction of nude figures has been common.
Similarly, in India, from prehistoric cave art to the sculptures in the temples of Khajuraho, nude imagery has been a consistent part of Indian culture. One of the main reasons for the nude form to be so commonly found in India is that in the ancient Hindu and Buddhist tradition, women were associated with fertility and prosperity.
