A Ramachandran
A Ramachandran (b. 1935) was a leading Indian modernist painter, muralist, and educator whose practice bridged classical Indian aesthetics and contemporary visual language. Born in 1935 in Attingal, Kerala, he initially studied Malayalam literature at Kerala University before moving to Santiniketan, where he trained at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University. At Santiniketan, he studied under Nandalal Bose, Ramkinkar Baij, and Benodebehari Mukherjee, an environment that profoundly shaped his engagement with Indian artistic traditions, mural practices, and modernist experimentation.

Ramachandran’s early work reflected an expressionistic response to urban life and socio-political tensions, particularly those he observed in Kolkata. By the 1980s, his practice underwent a significant transformation, moving away from urban angst toward an expansive engagement with myth, ornamentation, and rural and tribal life, especially communities in Rajasthan. His visual language became increasingly characterised by fluid, rhythmic line, dense patterning, and richly layered colour, drawing deeply from Indian classical art, temple murals, particularly those of Kerala, and folk traditions.

A central concern in his work was the synthesis of monumental mural sensibilities with the intimacy of miniature painting. His compositions often feature women, animals, and mythological figures set within lush, decorative environments, reflecting a sustained dialogue between nature, narrative, and symbolic form. He was also deeply involved in children’s book illustration and public art, contributing significantly to visual culture in India and internationally.

Ramachandran received numerous honours, including the National Awards for painting (1969, 1973), the Raja Ravi Varma Puraskaram (2003), and the Padma Bhushan (2005). His work has been widely exhibited across major international institutions, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

He passed away in 2024.
