Akhilesh Varma is an Indian contemporary artist, curator, and writer whose practice is deeply rooted in abstraction, Indian visual traditions, and the relationship between line, colour, form, and space. Born in Indore in 1956, Varma grew up in an artistic environment. His father was an art and drawing teacher in Madhya Pradesh. He initially resisted pursuing art as a profession but eventually completed a Diploma in Fine Arts and developed a distinctive artistic language shaped by his engagement with India's cultural and folk traditions.

Akhilesh Varma's paintings are particularly recognised for their vibrant linear abstractions and their connection with tribal and folk art traditions. His visual vocabulary uses lines, patterns, colour, and rhythmic forms to create compositions that move beyond conventional representation. His works often suggest a dialogue between tradition and the present, absence and presence, emptiness and completeness, while leaving space for viewers to interpret the imagery through their own experiences.

A distinctive quality of Akhilesh Varma's practice is his treatment of the line. Rather than functioning simply as an outline or descriptive device, the line becomes an independent visual element capable of generating movement, energy, rhythm, and spatial tension. His compositions have been described in relation to neural pathways and electric flashes, reflecting an artistic language in which seemingly simple marks acquire psychological and symbolic dimensions. He has also been associated with the Raza Foundation as a Trustee, reflecting his wider engagement with the development and promotion of contemporary Indian art.

Beyond his own studio practice, Akhilesh Varma has contributed significantly as a curator and writer. His curatorial work includes exhibitions such as Madhyama, supported by the Raza Foundation at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, and Words of Silence at Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai. His writings and critical engagements with fellow artists further demonstrate his interest in contemporary artistic discourse and in creating platforms for dialogue around Indian art.

Akhilesh Varma's career has also included artist residencies and institutional recognition. He has received artist in residence opportunities in France, Sweden, and Austria, along with honours including the Raza Foundation Award and recognition connected with Bharat Bhavan. His literary work has also been acknowledged through the Vagishwari Samman for his book Daraspothi.
