Amedeo Modigliani (1884 to 1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor whose distinct figurative style remains among the most recognizable in modern Western art. Born in Livorno, Italy, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice before moving to Paris in 1906, where he became immersed in the city's vibrant avant-garde milieu.

He initially worked as a sculptor under the influence of Constantin Brâncuși, and was inspired by African and Egyptian art as well. Modigliani turned primarily to painting after 1914 due to ill health and the demands of sculptural practice. His portraits and nudes are instantly recognisable for their elongated necks and faces, almond-shaped eyes, graceful contours, and colour palette. While his figures are highly stylised, they retain a remarkable psychological presence, reflecting the individuality and inner life of each sitter.

Throughout his career, Amedeo Modigliani portrayed fellow artists, writers, patrons, friends and lovers, producing an oeuvre that bridged classical style with the formal innovations of modernism. Although he struggled with financial hardship and received little recognition during his lifetime, his work has since become synonymous with the School of Paris and is regarded as one of the defining achievements of 20th-century art.

Modigliani died in Paris at the age of thirty-five, leaving behind a relatively small but profoundly influential body of work. Today, his paintings and sculptures are held in the collections of leading museums worldwide and remain among the most sought-after works in the international art market, celebrated for their timeless beauty, emotional depth and unmistakable artistic vision.
