Anirban Mitra was born in 1981 and completed his Master’s Degree in Fine Art from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, in 2008. He was a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2015.

The images in his paintings are composed through the formation of collages, depicting the coexistence of different realities and showcasing multiple meanings brought about by the juxtaposition of images or signs taken from popular culture. His work is heavily inspired by the canons of postmodernism, which examines the way the identity of images and symbols transforms when placed in different contexts.

There is a definitive rejection of modernism’s grand narrative style and direction. Instead of grand narratives, he incorporates regional symbols to create his intricate paintings.

The artist had his debut solo show, titled Inspecting the Construction, at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, in 2013, and has participated in multiple group shows and art fairs in India and abroad. His works are part of collections such as the Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas, USA; Paint Brush Diplomacy, USA; and Nippon Television Network Cultural Society, Tokyo, among others.

The artist lives and works in Santiniketan.
