Renowned for her psychologically charged paintings that blur the boundaries between autobiography, fiction, and art history, Anju Dodiya was born in 1964. A graduate of the Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai, in 1986, Dodiya has developed a deeply personal visual language that draws upon memory, dreams, and the emotional complexities of the human condition. While her early works explored abstraction, she soon embraced figuration, using the self-portrait as a recurring motif to examine vulnerability, fear, courage and transformation.

Dodiya creates compositions in which the protagonist is often a version of herself, navigating imagined landscapes populated by symbolic objects and dramatic narratives. Her practice synthesises influences from Indian miniature painting, medieval European tapestries, Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Renaissance art, literature and cinema, resulting in works that oscillate between fantasy and reality. Delicate yet emotionally intense, her paintings invite viewers into an introspective world where personal experiences become universal meditations on identity, mortality and resilience.

Anju has participated in various solo and group exhibitions in India and internationally. Her works are held in leading public and private collections worldwide.

She presently lives and works in Mumbai.
