Apurba Nandi
Apurba Nandi, born in 1973 in Vadodara, Gujarat, is a contemporary Indian artist known for his figurative paintings and sculptures that explore themes of urban crowds, human movement, and social existence. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture in 1998 and his Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture in 2000, both from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda.
Apurba Nandi's work is deeply influenced by his experiences in densely populated urban environments, particularly Mumbai, where he now lives and works. His paintings often depict multitudes of people moving in various directions, reduced to rhythmic patterns of heads, hands, and eyes. These formations serve as an inquiry into the order of society and an investigation into individual existence within the social fabric. He has described his process as waiting for the city to absorb him, observing crowds until they transform into visual patterns that become cathartic to render on canvas.
The artist works primarily with acrylics on canvas, appreciating the medium's fast-drying quality that allows for extensive layering. He also enjoys charcoal drawings. His sculptural background informs his painterly practice, bringing a three-dimensional sensibility to his two-dimensional works. Apurba Nandi has held numerous solo and group exhibitions across India since 1997. Notable shows include the Gujarat Lalit Kala Exhibition in Ahmadabad (1997), the 47th National Exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi (2004), the Winter Show at Venkatappa Art Gallery in Bangalore (2005), Hanging Sculptures at Akruti Art Gallery in Baroda (2005), the 11th Harmony Show in Mumbai (2006), Sculptors from Baroda at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai (2006), and Mapping Baroda at Art Room Gallery in New Delhi (2007). His more recent solo exhibition, The Patterns of Crowds, was presented in Mumbai in 2021.
He has received significant recognition including the National Scholarship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, New Delhi (2001-2003), and the Grant of Scholarship from Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (2005-2006).
