Arindam Chatterjee, born in 1972 in West Bengal, is a contemporary Indian painter known for his powerful figurative works that blend neo-expressionist intensity with abstract elements. He studied painting at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and later at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan.

Arindam Chatterjee began his career as an abstract artist in the 1990s and gained significant recognition during that period. Around 2007, driven by a need for more direct and communicative expression in response to the conflictual world and its recent history, he transitioned to figurative painting. His works create a bleak vision of contemporary existence, exposing culture's dark past, unrealized potential, and unresolved contradictions. Vestiges of his abstract background remain visible in his figurative pieces, characterized by rich handling of mediums and indeterminate figures and emotions.

The artist works primarily on paper rather than canvas, employing a variety of mixed media including pencil, tempera, crayon, pastel, oil, and watercolor. He describes the interaction between these different materials as a form of dialogue, creating layered and textured surfaces that enhance the emotional weight of his imagery. His powerful, often troubling images of humans and animals, which may appear mythological or outlandish, are deeply connected to social, political, and cultural realities.

Arindam Chatterjee has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. His solo exhibitions include Not a Dream, Not Peace, Not Love at Emami Art in 2024, and avamānava at Emami Art in 2025. He has held solo shows with Chitrakoot Art Gallery and Akar Prakar in Kolkata, Gallery Art Motif and Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi, and Tao Art Gallery in Mumbai. He participated in the Triennial at the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi in 2005. He has received the National Cultural Scholarship and the Junior Research Fellowship in painting from the Government of India. Chatterjee lives and works in Kolkata.
