Arup Das
Born in West Bengal in 1924, Arup Das remains a prominent figure among Indian modern artists, particularly known for his prowess as a muralist and painter

In the 1940s, Das successfully graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta Subsequently, during the 1960s, he became a member of the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society in New Delhi

In 1972, a British Council fellowship facilitated Das's journey to Europe, exposing him to various art movements and the works of European masters His paintings often feature the recurring theme of a messiah offering salvation and hope to people

Shaped by the socio-political landscape of 1940s India and the ensuing changes in the '50s, Das, like many of his contemporaries, reflected the struggles of the people in his art Human figures occupy a central position in his paintings, portraying man as a social and historical being within the cultural environment This characteristic renders Das's art timeless, rooted in the socio-cultural context that he intricately captures

Das showcased his versatility by seamlessly transitioning between oil and watercolor painting His most productive and innovative moments occurred when working with a combination of media, utilizing a diverse range of shades to depict human figures

The artist gained recognition through numerous exhibitions in India and abroad His accolades include the national award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and the President’s silver plaque in 1957 Notably, his works are housed in prestigious collections, such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, Sahitya Kala Parishad, and All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi
