Arup Das
Born in West Bengal in 1924, Arup Das remains a prominent figure among Indian modern artists, particularly known for his prowess as a muralist and painter
In the 1940s, Das successfully graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta Subsequently, during the 1960s, he became a member of the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society in New Delhi
In 1972, a British Council fellowship facilitated Das's journey to Europe, exposing him to various art movements and the works of European masters His paintings often feature the recurring theme of a messiah offering salvation and hope to people
Shaped by the socio-political landscape of 1940s India and the ensuing changes in the '50s, Das, like many of his contemporaries, reflected the struggles of the people in his art Human figures occupy a central position in his paintings, portraying man as a social and historical being within the cultural environment This characteristic renders Das's art timeless, rooted in the socio-cultural context that he intricately captures
