Arzan Khambatta
Arzan Khambatta, born in 1982 in Mumbai, is a multifaceted artist whose journey into the art world began under the mentorship of noted artist Anand Mohan Naik and at the sculptor Adi Davierwala's workshop Encouraged by his parents, Khambatta began sculpting immediately after completing his 10th standard exams Though he holds a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from Rachna Sansad Academy of Architecture, Mumbai, he identifies as an architect by profession and a sculptor by choice
Khambatta's early artistic endeavours involved scavenging scrap metal from streets, garages, and construction sites to create what he calls 'Scraptures'—art pieces forged from discarded materials His hobby turned profitable in 1983 when he sold his first sculpture His first public exhibition was held at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai in 1993 His creations, characterised by dramatic elements like rivers of lava and flaming planets, often utilise the interplay of light and shadow to evoke various moods
In 1985, he unveiled his first public sculpture, 'The Mughal,' in Worli, Mumbai He stopped using scrap metal for his sculptures in 1996 Beyond sculpting, Khambatta has explored filmmaking, with his debut film 'Decibels' addressing noise pollution He is also involved in designing props and sets for experimental plays, creating trophies, and teaching his craft to children from diverse backgrounds Khambatta continues to live and work in Mumbai,
