Born in 1959 in Mumbai, Atul Dodiya is among the foremost figures of contemporary Indian art, renowned for a practice that intertwines personal memory, history, politics, and art history. He trained at the Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1982. Dodiya later studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1991–92) on a French Government scholarship. The encounter with European art history immensely enriched his visual language, enabling him to forge meaningful dialogues between Indian and Western artistic traditions.

Dodiya is recognised for his ability to weave together references from literature, cinema, mythology and popular culture with historical and political narratives. His works often reflect on the aspirations and anxieties of India's middle class, while engaging with broader questions of identity, nationalism and collective memory.

The artist has showcased his works in several solo and group exhibitions across India and internationally. Dodiya lives and works in Mumbai, where he continues to shape the discourse of contemporary Indian art through an ever-evolving and intellectually rigorous practice.
