Born in 1974 in Kolkata, Avijit Dutta obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Rabindra Bharati University His fascination with the lives of the people in the past and their experiences manifests itself in his work He won the award for Best Watercolourist in the year 1996 by the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata His process of working is quite unique in the sense that every time he picks up a particular theme and then paints a series of paintings based on that An example in his series ‘We Rise or We sink’ based on Indian Sadhus and it came about after extensive research on their lifestyle He also worked on the ‘Lavanya’ series in 2007 which focus on women in their multiple facets His preferred medium is tempera on canvas and he uses a very limited colour palette In the year 2014, he received the Vice-Versa Residency Fellowship at the Shang Yuan Art Museum in Beijing, China In 2018 he was invited by the Gallerie Ganesha to exhibit his solo show titled ‘Ensoul’ at the India Art Fair According to the artist, his paintings are “A juxtaposition of elements which are from different forms and time periods - past and present” Apart from this, he has also been a part of various group shows both In India and internationally The artist lives and works in Kolkata
