Baiju Parthan has established a unique bricolage of art informed by his diverse scholastic influences incurred from training in different subjects, including botany, illustration, comparative mythology and computer science Born in 1956 in Kerala, the artist initially chose the conventional career path and began as a student of Engineering In 1974, after an introduction to different European movements, including Impressionism and Expressionism, through a book on Western Art History, he became irresistibly fascinated Eventually, in 1978, he enrolled in a course at Goa College of Art and graduated in 1983

A unique blend of numinous and contemporary artistic idiom, Parthan’s artistic scope spans wide and far to inhibit multiple worlds and meanings An artist of mythopoeic imagination, he invokes a personal visual language to create highly provocative and richly textured works that stand at the intersection of the material world and the nonmaterial intangible digital sphere and explore the complex and symbiotic relations between humans and machines

In a career spanning three decades, Baiju Parthan has practised in a varied range of mediums and techniques Beginning with painting, he moved towards a multimedia art practice involving an intriguing use of symbols and archaic imagery His source of materials is equally diverse Apart from the tools of modern mass media like television, newspapers, and animation, he has also extensively employed unique objects such as ancient cosmological diagrams, satellite maps, and other scientific charts Interactive programming-based art and lenticular digital prints on metallic surfaces have also been a part of his oeuvre
