Bimal Kundu
Bimal Kundu (b. 1954, Kolkata) is a contemporary Indian sculptor known for his ability to distill complex ideas into deceptively simple forms. He studied painting and sculpture at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, graduating with first-class distinction in sculpture in 1981.

Kundu’s sculptural language is rooted in what may be described as a semi-realistic cubist approach, where form is reduced to its essentials without losing its expressive charge. His works often appear minimal at first glance, yet reveal layered narratives upon closer engagement. Figures and objects are constructed through simplified volumes and planes, inviting the viewer into a quiet visual dialogue that unfolds gradually. His practice reflects a sustained interest in materiality, working across a diverse range of media including bronze, stone, wood, leather, and fibreglass, while continually experimenting with new forms and surfaces.

Alongside intimate, small-scale works, Kundu has created several notable public sculptures that have become part of Kolkata’s urban landscape. Among these are Bird, an eight-foot aluminium sculpture installed at Kolkata airport, Birpurush, a fourteen-foot work at Nicco Park, and Kolkata, a ten-foot concrete sculpture located on VIP Road. These works demonstrate his ability to translate his formal concerns into monumental scale without losing their clarity or immediacy.

Kundu has exhibited widely in group shows across India at galleries such as CIMA, Aakriti, Vadehra, Cymroza, and Gallery Sumukha, and has participated in numerous international art camps. His works are held in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata. Over the years, he has received several honours, including the Lalit Kala Akademi National Award, alongside recognitions such as the Gaganendranath Memorial Medal and the Birla Academy Award. A member of the Society of Contemporary Artists since 1989, Kundu continues to live and work in Kolkata.
