Biswapati Maity
Biswapati Maity (also spelled Biswapati Maiti), born in 1947, is an Indian painter known for his figurative works that explore themes of human relationships, nature, and everyday life. He received his formal art training at the Government College of Art & Craft in Calcutta (now Kolkata), where he developed a foundation in both traditional and contemporary artistic practices.
Biswapati Maity's practice is characterized by a sensitive approach to the human form, often depicting intimate moments and emotional connections between figures. His works frequently feature mother-and-child compositions, couples, and solitary figures rendered with a gentle realism that conveys warmth and tenderness. He works primarily in acrylic on canvas, though he has also produced drawings and paintings on paper. Nature serves as a recurring source of inspiration in his work, with landscapes and natural elements often forming the backdrop or integral components of his compositions.
Throughout his career, Biswapati Maity has held multiple solo exhibitions at Galerie 88 (including shows in 1989, 1991, 1994, and 1997). Since 1970, his works have been featured in major group showcases and national exhibitions organized by institutions such as the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata, the Birla Academy of Art & Culture, and the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi and Kolkata. His artworks are represented in various public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), the Lalit Kala Akademi, and the Birla Academy of Art & Culture.
