Artists Profile

Chanchal Mukherjee
Chanchal Mukherjee is a contemporary Indian painter based in Kolkata, West Bengal, known for his evocative works that play with shadows and light, fantasy and fact, dreams and ethereal beauty. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, between 1979 and 1985, and has worked as a professional painter since 1985.
Chanchal Mukherjee's paintings are characterized by gently drawn faces with big, expressive eyes that convey a sense of wonder and introspection. His brushstrokes modulate colors with great ease, allowing forms to emerge organically from the canvas. He employs innovative textural techniques, often using titanium white acrylic paint as a base coat brushed on with a palette knife to create an exciting play of surfaces. His work explores themes of fragmentation, where subject matter is partially lost in swathing layers and strokes of paint, yet emerges with captivating enigma. The artist draws inspiration from his immediate environment, constructing myths mediated through symbols and metaphors.
In addition to painting, Chanchal Mukherjee also works in sculpture, demonstrating versatility across mediums. His artworks have been featured in numerous exhibitions across India and have been acquired by prestigious institutions including the National Gallery of Modern Art and Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi. His works are also held in private collections in the United States and Japan, including the Glenbarra Foundation. He has participated in group exhibitions such as Surreal Secrets in Chennai (2009), which featured artists exploring the realm beyond reality through symbols, metaphors, and decorative play.
