Debanjan Roy
Debanjan Roy was born in 1975 in Kolkata He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts in 1998 and received his Master’s degree in 2000 from Rabindra Bharti University, Santiniketan His ability to transfer his expression through figurative sculptures is astonishing He revels in the completeness of his work through sculptures; the 3D attribute of sculptures gives him that satisfaction 

One of the few artists who uses Gandhiji’s motif extensively in his series, in his sculpture titled ‘Bapu with Soldiers' he depicts a fragile Gandhi being supported by soldiers in a moment of cheer The privilege of the soldiers is apparent while Bapu has an expression of complete content and security He has always utilised the colour red to symbolise Gandhiji’s contribution to our nation’s freedom, personifying the sacrifices he made for the county’s liberation His methodologies fuse traditional expression with a pop colour palette fueled with patriotism and nationalism, a subject not too many artists work withOn the completion of his Master’s degree he received the “Best Sculpture” award from the West Bengal State Academy

He has participated in a number of solo shows held at esteemed galleries including Gandhara Gallery, Kolkata in 2007 and Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata in 2002 His notable group shows include ‘Who Knew? Mr Gandhi’ at Aicon Gallery, London in 2008; ‘Eastern Edge’ at Aicon Gallery, New York in 2007; ‘New Wave in Bengal Art’ at Gallery Akar Prakar, Kolkata in 2005; ‘Tale of Two Cities’ at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata & Mumbai and Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in 2004 Debanjan Roy lives and works from Kolkata
