Dhananjay Singh
Born in Hajipur, Bihar in 1977, Dhananjay Singh is a contemporary Indian sculptor known for his intricate metal works that explore the relationship between human existence and the natural world. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Visual Arts at Banaras Hindu University and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU, Baroda.
Singh’s sculptural practice centres on the transformation of rigid industrial materials into fluid, organic forms. Working primarily with bronze and stainless steel wires, he twists, bends, and intertwines them to create near-human-scale sculptures that appear both delicate and dynamic. His works often draw inspiration from natural structures such as branches, roots, and growing organisms, translating these forms into metal with remarkable grace and movement. The resulting sculptures possess an almost ethereal quality, suggesting motion and vitality while blurring the boundaries between strength and fragility.
Through these layered and intricately constructed forms, Singh reflects on themes of balance, growth, and transformation. His practice reveals a sustained curiosity about the processes of evolution and adaptation, exploring how life unfolds both within nature and the human experience.
Over the course of his career, Singh has received several notable recognitions, including the Harmony Excellence Award for Emerging Artist of the Year (2005), the INLAKS Fine Art Award (2005), the Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Award (2005), and the Gujarat State Academy Award, Ahmedabad (2004). His work has been exhibited in significant exhibitions such as the Gulf Art Fair (2007), the Bharat Bhavan International Biennial of Print-Art, Bhopal (2006), and a sculpture exhibition at the Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad (2005). Singh held his first solo exhibition at the Faculty of Art & Design, Monash University, Melbourne, where he also served as Sculptor-in-Residence.
