Dhruva Mistry
Born in 1957 in Kanjari, Gujarat, sculptor Dhruva Mistry graduated with distinction from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University in 1979 He went on to complete his MA in Baroda in 1981 after which he received a British Council Scholarship to study sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 1983
His sculptures combine religious art history with popular kitsch art from the bazaar His works carry with them a deep narrative as well as engaging He received a fellowship from the Churchill College, Cambridge and then completed a residency at Kettle’s Yard Gallery from 1984-1985 He held his first solo show in 1994 at Fukuoka Annual VII, Japan Among his many achievements is being elected Royal Academician in 1991 and being appointed Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, London in 1993 He was also the Professor of Sculpture and Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda from 1998-2002 He has exhibited his works nationally and internationally He lives and works in Baroda
