Artists Profile

F N Souza
Francis Newton Souza was one of the most influential figures in modern Indian art and a founding member of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group. Born in 1924 in Saligão, Goa, which was then under Portuguese rule, Souza grew up in a devout Catholic environment that later shaped many of the themes in his work. He moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) as a child and studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art, though he was expelled in 1945 for participating in political protests against colonial rule.
In 1947, alongside artists such as S. H. Raza and M. F. Husain, Souza co-founded the Progressive Artists’ Group, which sought to break away from academic realism and develop a modern visual language rooted in both Indian and international influences. His paintings became known for their bold outlines, distorted figures, and provocative imagery addressing themes of religion, sexuality, and power.
In 1949, Souza moved to London, where his career gained international recognition after a major exhibition at Gallery One in 1955, supported by critic Herbert Read. During the 1960s, he also spent significant time in New York City, further establishing his reputation in the global art world.
Souza’s work spans painting, drawing, and writing, and remains celebrated for its raw expressionism and intellectual intensity. He died in 2002 in Mumbai. Today, he is regarded as a pioneering force in the development of modern Indian art, with his works held in major international collections.
