Artists Profile

Farhad Husain
Born in 1975 in Jamshedpur, Farhad Hussain is a contemporary Indian artist whose figurative paintings are distinguished by their vivid colour, intricate surface treatment and layered narratives. He studied Painting at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, before completing his MFA at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 2005. His academic training brought together the artistic traditions of Santiniketan and Baroda, helping to shape a practice that is both technically accomplished and conceptually engaging.
At the heart of Hussain's work is an exploration of human relationships and the complexities of contemporary life. His compositions are populated by expressive figures whose interactions unfold through subtle gestures, symbolism and carefully constructed narratives. Executed mostly in tempera on cloth, his paintings are marked by luminous colours, meticulous dot-by-dot application and intricate decorative patterning. Drawing inspiration from Indian miniature painting, Kalighat traditions, Japanese prints and imagery from popular culture, he synthesises these diverse influences into a highly personal visual language that balances humour, irony and psychological insight.
Hussain has presented solo exhibitions at leading galleries including Vadehra Art Gallery, Pundole Art Gallery and India Art Fair, while participating in numerous exhibitions in India and internationally. His achievements include the Nasreen Mohamedi Scholarship (2004) and the Best Watercolour Award at the Indian Art College Art Exhibition (1998). Today, his works form part of important private and institutional collections, reflecting his significant contribution to contemporary Indian figurative painting.
