G R Santosh
Gulam Rasool Santosh was a pioneering Indian painter, poet and thinker whose work played a defining role in the development of Neo-Tantric art in modern India. Born Gulam Rasool Dar in Srinagar, Kashmir, he grew up in the culturally layered landscape of the Kashmir Valley, an environment that deeply shaped his artistic sensibility. Financial constraints following his father’s death forced him to take up various jobs, including signboard painting, silk weaving and papier-mâché work, while continuing to pursue painting. In 1954, he received a government scholarship to study under N. S. Bendre at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, on the recommendation of S. H. Raza.

Santosh’s early practice centred on landscapes of Kashmir, often rendered with a semi-abstract and later Cubist vocabulary that reflected both modernist influences and an emotional connection to his homeland. A transformative visit to the Amarnath cave in 1964 led him towards the philosophy of Tantra and Kashmir Shaivism, which profoundly altered the direction of his art. Drawing on the purusha-prakriti concept of cosmic union, he developed a distinctive visual language of geometric forms, radiant colour and symbolic imagery that explored the metaphysical relationship between the male and female principles.

Widely regarded as one of the leading exponents of Neo-Tantric art, Santosh’s work fused spiritual philosophy with modern abstraction. Alongside his painting practice, he was an accomplished poet and writer in Kashmiri, Urdu and English, engaging deeply with tantric thought and mysticism. Over the course of his career he held numerous solo exhibitions and received several honours, including the Lalit Kala Akademi National Award on three occasions and the Padma Shri in 1977. Santosh passed away in New Delhi in 1997, leaving behind a body of work that remains central to discussions of spirituality and abstraction in modern Indian art.
