artist
Gauri Gill
Born in Chandigarh in 1970, Gauri Gill has established an internationally acclaimed photographic practice that examines the relationship between people, place, and lived experience. Her work is grounded in sustained engagement with communities across India, often unfolding over many years to reveal intimate narratives that challenge conventional documentary traditions. Through photography and collaborative projects, Gill investigates themes of belonging, resilience, identity, and cultural memory, creating images that are both socially engaged and poetically evocative.

Her artistic education began in New Delhi before she continued her studies in the United States, where she specialised in photography and later completed a Master of Fine Arts. These experiences shaped an interdisciplinary approach that merges documentary observation with conceptual inquiry, allowing her to move beyond conventional image-making towards forms of visual storytelling rooted in dialogue and participation.

A defining aspect of Gill's practice is her long-term collaboration with artists and communities, resulting in projects that expand the boundaries of photography through shared authorship. By integrating indigenous artistic traditions, oral histories and local perspectives, her work offers a layered understanding of contemporary India while foregrounding voices that are often overlooked within mainstream narratives.

Gill has exhibited widely at major museums, biennales and international art institutions, and her photographs are represented in numerous public and private collections around the world. Her contribution to contemporary photography has been recognised through several prestigious awards, reflecting the global significance of a practice that continues to redefine the possibilities of documentary and collaborative art.
