Gopal Adivrekar
Gopal Adivrekar was born in 1938 in a Konkani village called Phanasgaon in Maharashtra He completed his graduation from the JJ School of Art in 1963 An abstract artist, he was renowned for his command over the vivid colours he utilised He was also associated with the Lalit Kala Academy and Weavers’ Service Centre for several years Adivrekar also spent a couple of years serving as the Chairman of Bombay Art Society
Taking inspiration from the coastal region he spent his childhood years in, his canvases were poetic renditions of the beaches and ocean he was familiar with His non-figurative works were powerful abstractions that held no hint of naturalism
He deviated from the style he was associated with in 1998 to create sculptures that symbolised the animal and human species His paintings of the time too represented similar themes but in a style that was a departure from his usual works
The artist passed away in 2008
