Gopal Ghose
One of the founding members of the Calcutta Group and a major artist of the 20th century India, Gopal Ghose was born in the year 1913 in Calcutta He completed his Diploma in Painting from the Maharaja School of Arts and Crafts, Jaipur He also trained under Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury who was popular for his realistic painting style and sculpturesGopal Ghose mastered various mediums ranging from watercolour to tempera, pen and ink to name a few Even then he was most widely known as a prominent watercolourist He was really fascinated with Indian landscape and travelled extensively all over India for inspiration His landscapes were even admired by people like Jawaharlal Nehru because they succeeded in capturing the grandeur and majesty that he witnessed in his surroundings His approach toward nature and landscapes bring to mind the sense of pleasure that poets like Wordsworth used to get from their natural surroundings Even when he travelled to America it was not the massive sky scrapers or cityscapes that inspired him but the vastness of the North American countryside His works are increasingly difficult to come by and very rarely can a large body of his work be viewed together His works are a part of important collections like Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata and the National Gallery of Modern Indian Art, New Delhi The artist passed away on the 30th of July in 1980
