Imran Qureshi
Noor Ali Chagani is a contemporary artist who was born in Karachi, Pakistan He initially studied Computer Science in Karachi but after receiving his BS degree he decided to switch course He completed his BFA in miniature painting from National College of Arts in Lahore His sculptures imbibe the spirit of his own culture and he increasingly uses materials that are common to that region like the handmade bricks of terracotta He is fascinated by the idea of walls and the multifaceted meaning that it carries It can either symbolise a sense of ownership or some isolation The artist claims that ‘In my sculptures, I play with the many meanings of walls, making them appear to be moving rather than stagnant, pliable rather than rigid’ He had his first major international solo exhibition at Leila Heller Gallery, New York in 2016 He has also participated in several group exhibitions like ETHEREAL, at Leila Heller Gallery, New York curated by Dr Amin Jaffer in 2014, ‘House of bricks’ at Leila Heller Gallery, New York in 2016 He was nominated for the JameelArt Residency in 2016 at Victoria & Albert Museum, London in 2016 He received the Rijks Academy residency in the Netherlands in 2012 and the Riwaq Art Space Residency in Bahrain in 2013 The artist is now based out of Lahore
