Jagannath Mohapatra
Born in 1969 in Bhadrak, Odisha, Jagannath Mohapatra is an Indian contemporary artist recognised for his compelling visual narratives rooted in the realities of everyday life. He initially studied History at Utkal University and also trained in music before turning to painting as his primary mode of expression. Mohapatra completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, Visva-Bharati University in 1999, and later obtained a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, in 2001. His academic engagement with history has significantly informed his artistic concerns, particularly his interest in social realities and contemporary issues.

Mohapatra’s works often address the harsh conditions of modern life, with particular attention to the struggles of child labour and marginalised communities. Employing a realist visual language, he frequently situates his figures within carefully constructed architectural spaces. Construction sites and urban environments recur in his paintings as metaphors for fractured aspirations and social inequality. Over time, his practice has evolved to incorporate layered landscapes, symbolic imagery and a quiet sense of tension that lies beneath otherwise calm and visually appealing surfaces.

Art historian and artist K. G. Subramanyan observed that Mohapatra belongs to a generation of artists who draw upon the unreal nature of images found in advertisements, hoardings and popular media, reworking them into complex visual narratives.

Mohapatra has exhibited widely across India, presenting works in both solo and group exhibitions at institutions and galleries including Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata; Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; Gallery Kaleidoscope and Sarjan Art Gallery, Baroda; and Chitrakoot Art Gallery, Kolkata, among others. He has received several scholarships and awards, including the National Scholarship, the Merit Scholarship from Kala Bhavana, the Nandalal Bose Scholarship, the Krishna Reddy Scholarship and the Lions Club Scholarship of Odisha. His works form part of several important public and private collections.
