artist
Jagdish Chintala
Born in Hyderabad, India, in 1956, the artist Jagdish Chintala discovered his passion for drawing early in life However, it wasn't until he engaged in crafting puppets for a children's theater group during his initial struggles as an independent artist that he stumbled upon the medium of paper From these humble beginnings, his papier mache creations evolved into intricate busts, masks, and life-sized figures that reflect his keen perception of the external world and the inherent flaws of human nature

Drawing inspiration from his childhood experiences, toys, and acquaintances in India, each of Jagdish's pieces acquires a distinct and unique character Through elements like clothing, facial expressions, posture, and hand gestures, he subtly reveals the intimate human emotions embedded in his work This depiction of universal sentiments not only comments affectionately on society but also weaves captivating narratives

Jagdish's artistic journey reached a milestone when he secured his first paper sculpture prize at the All India Miniature Exhibition Subsequently, he earned a grant scholarship to hone his skills at the prestigious Garhi Studio in Delhi This experience led to further recognition, including the British Council and Charles Wallace India traveling grant for studies in Britain In 1991, Jagdish achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Indian artist granted the status of "artist in residence" at Lakeside Studio outside of Chicago His crowning achievement came in 1993 when he was honored with the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award, the largest grant available to independent artists in the United States

Despite these accolades, Jagdish remains active on three continents, maintaining studios in India, Great Britain, and the United States
