Artists Profile

artist
Jayanta Bhattacharya
The artist developed an affinity for art from an early age, beginning formal lessons at the age of seven. Childhood experiences of modelling clay and creating devotional figures laid the foundation for a lifelong engagement with sculpture and the expressive possibilities of form. Born in Kolkata in 1974, although he initially pursued higher education in the sciences, his growing commitment to art led him to undertake formal training in fine arts, inspired in part by the noted artist Sri Madhav Bhattacharya.

He later enrolled at the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta, where he completed a Master of Visual Arts (M.V.A.) in 2004. This academic training strengthened his technical proficiency while allowing him to cultivate a practice that moves between sculpture and painting. His works are distinguished by a sensitive understanding of form, volume and material, often balancing classical craftsmanship with a contemporary artistic sensibility.

The artist has received significant recognition, including the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi and an award from the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society. His monumental sculptures have been exhibited internationally, with invitations to present his work in South Korea, London and Sri Lanka, reflecting the growing international appreciation of his practice. His works are represented in numerous public and private collections in India, the United States and elsewhere.

Based in Kolkata, he continues to devote himself entirely to his artistic practice, working across both sculpture and painting while exploring new forms of creative expression.
