Artists Profile

Jayashree Chakravarty
Jayashree Chakravarty was born in Khoai, Tripura, in 1956, but grew up in a developing suburb of Kolkata The transformation of the lush green landscape of her childhood into a grey concrete jungle would later inspire her artistic work, which often explores themes of old and new cityscapes Describing her work as autobiographical and dreamlike, Chakravarty has developed a unique visual language to convey ideas of truth, nature, and unity She frequently experiments with organic materials such as paper, rice paper, tissue, and cellophane, creating fluid and transparent images that invite multiple interpretations
The artist completed her Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, in 1978, and earned a postgraduate diploma from M S University, Vadodara, in 1980 In 1993, she relocated to France, where she worked as an artist-in-residence in Aix-en-Provence for two years During this time, she encountered and was influenced by the French art movement Supports/Surfaces, as well as the work of painter Claude Viallat
In her work, Chakravarty often employs superimposed forms, reminiscent of the preparatory sketches made by cave painters before transferring them onto cave walls She believes that connecting with people from distant countries and different cultures expanded her creative imagination, challenging and reshaping pre-conceived images Her ink-on-paper sketches serve as an exploration of transforming personal experiences into mystical truths
Chakravarty has exhibited her work in museums and galleries around the world Her works are also part of the permanent collections at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and the Chandigarh Museum She currently lives and works in Kolkata
