artist
Jayashree Chakravarty
Born in 1956 in Khoai, Tripura, Jayashree Chakravarty watched her lush childhood landscapes vanish beneath Kolkata’s urban sprawl, a transformation that fueled her dreamlike, autobiographical art. Exploring the friction between nature and the concrete jungle, she began crafting a unique visual language using organic materials like rice paper, tissue, and cellophane. Her fluid, transparent layers weave together personal memory and universal truths, inviting viewers into a world where the old and new coalesce.

Chakravarty holds a Bachelor's degree from Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan (1978), and a postgraduate diploma from M S University, Vadodara (1980). A 1993 residency in Aix-en-Provence, France, proved pivotal; there, she was deeply influenced by Claude Viallat and the Supports/Surfaces movement, elements of which still resonate in her practice.

Her technique involves a layering of forms, a method that echoes the ancestral spirit of cave painters who mapped out visions before committing them to stone. This process of superimposition allows her to distill personal memories into mystical, universal truths. Her creative horizon was significantly broadened through cross-cultural dialogues, as she found that engaging with diverse global perspectives constantly challenged and revitalised her artistic imagination.

Her works have been showcased at premier galleries and museums worldwide, earning a place in the prestigious permanent collections. These include the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Chandigarh Museum.

The artist continues to push the boundaries of her craft from her base in Kolkata.
