Jitish Kallat
A multimedia artist with his oeuvre of painting, photography, collages, sculpture, and installation, Jitish Kallat’s work often draws on the idea of time and history
Born in Mumbai in 1974, Kallat received his Bachelor’s degree in painting from Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai in 1996 Rendering his paintings with his self-image as the protagonist in many of his works, Kallat’s work is often biographical addressing profound themes of time, death, personal relations, etc Some of his best works celebrate his home city of Mumbai Some of his early works were based on billboards and the popular advertising culture of Mumbai as well as socioeconomic and political circumstances going on in the city It can be said that Kallat’s works alternate between his views on self, city, and the nation
Kallat has exhibited across the country and the world with shows at museums and institutions such as Kunstmuseum (Bern), SerpentineGalleries(London), and to name a few He was also the curator and artistic director of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014
His numerous exhibitions including ‘Another World’, Arario Gallery, Cheonan, Korea, 2006; ‘Indian Summer’, Ecole de Beaux Arts, Paris, 2005; ‘Armory Show’, New York, 2005; ‘Zoom’, Culturgest Museum, Lisbon, 2004; ‘Subterrain’, HKW, Berlin, 2004; ‘The Tree From The Seed’, Henie Onstad Kultursenter, Oslo, Norway, 2003; ‘Under Construction’, Japan Foundation Asia Center, Tokyo, 2002; ‘Century City’, Tate Modern, London, 2001; ‘Seventh Havana Biennial’, Havana, 2000; ‘1st Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale’, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; ‘Art of the World, Passage de Retz, Paris, 1998; and ‘Innenseite’, Kassel, Germany, 1997, amongst many others This year he will exhibit at the Gwangju Biennale, Lille 3000 at Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels and the Asia Pacific Triennial, Brisbane amongst others
The artist lives and works in Mumbai He also writes frequently on the subject of contemporary art
