Jogesh Chandra Seal was an Indian Asian Modern & Contemporary artist who was born in 1895 Jogesh Chandra Seal studied art at the Jubilee Art Academy in Kolkata The academy was a private institution that sought to train its pupils in the contemporary British art style as opposed to the nationalist trend of the Bengal School of Art Among his classmates were Atul Bose and Hemendranath Mazumdar
Trained in the British academic style, Jogesh Chandra Seal sought inspiration in local art forms and frequently depicted rural Bengali women in his paintings He often portrayed his subjects engaged in leisurely activities or daydreaming, exuberating mystery and intimacy The artist’s tantalising silence about the identity of the model also heightened the enigma surrounding her
The artist was offered consistent patronage by Sir Rajender Prasad Mukhopadhya and the King of Burdwan A promising artist of his time, his career was tragically cut short after his death at the age of thirty-one
