Julian Opie
Born in London in 1958, Julian Opie is a British contemporary artist who studied at the Goldsmith’s School of Art, London, graduating in 1982 His works are an exploration of urban and rural spaces as well as human motion witnessed in everyday life Created with bold outlines and using flat colours, these sculptures take inspiration from various art forms like Japanese blocks, hieroglyphs and classical portraits Over the years, Opie’s art has been brought down to its most simplistic form, concentrating moreso on the silhouettes created and the illusion of movement He uses various mediums for his visual narratives like vinyl, lenticular, LED, LCD and more These are a departure from his early works which were executed in painted steel
Opie is also part of an influential group of artists called New British Sculpture alongside British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor and Tony Cragg Amongst his many well-known works and public commissions is Suzanne Walking, a motif that has appeared in his works through his illustrious career Five Men Waiting (2006) is another such series with five vinyl painted steel figures created in bold outlines against vibrantly coloured backdrops depicted in various poses They’re instantly recognisable as the artist’s work as they are executed in his signature pared-back yet impactful style His fascination with the human form in motion or in repose is visible throughout this work and Five Men Waiting is no exception Other subjects he enjoys working with are architectural forms like windows, rural landscapes, lenticular portraits and graphic studies of birds
