Justin Ponmany
Justin Ponmany was born in 1974 in Kerala, India He did his BFA in Painting from Sir J J School of Art Justin Ponmany is from the Contemporary school of painting that is rooted in Mumbai's media and film industries but also exhibits strong affinities with Western Postmodern art A large portion of his work uses aggressive imagery and methods that are similar to those found in Pop, Surreal, and Expressionistic approaches
His distinctive combination of graphic reproduction and photo editing with phosphorescent pigment lends his work a whimsical and ephemeral quality The materials used by Ponmany produce works that are both physically active and optically dynamic when viewed from diverse perspectives, distances, and lighting situations The classic symbols of Ponmany's visual lexicon are the dreamy rainbow prisms that flow over the glistening silver sheen
He has participated in an International artists’ workshop held at Koraput (Orissa) known as Dongar in 1995, and has been part of 10th Triennale international sculptors’ workshop by Lalit Kala Akademy (2001) in Chandigarh, All India senior sculptors’ camp in Visakhapatnam (1998), and Sculptor’s Workshop by Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority in (1998)
Ponmany has had several shows in India and abroad: `Awardees` -Bose Pacia Gallery, New York, `Highlights`- Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, `Crosscurrents`- Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, and `Debt`- The Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai He has also won several awards: the 1997 - 98 Fellowship at Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai, the Western Railway Centenary Prize at NGMA, Mumbai (2000) and was 1st Runner Up at the 4th Bose Pacia Prize for Contemporary Art (2003) The artist lives and works in Mumbai
A solo show of the artist’s works, largely comprising three-dimensional objects, was held at Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore in 2007 His works have been featured at Lalit kala Akademy’s 41st national exhibition of art in New Delhi in 1998, and also at Ksetra Art Gallery, Visakhapatnam (2004) He has executed more than 300 sculptures in Andhra Pradesh for public commissions, and has conceived/designed a tribal art and life museum in Andhra Pradesh, the state in which Venkat Bothsa lives and works
